What Does a Move Manager Actually Do? (And Why You Need One)

“I had no idea a service like yours existed!”

“I could have used you when we moved!”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard those words!

When I started The Organizing Professionals 20 years ago, most people had never heard of a professional organizer. We’ve come a long way since then. I took to the work immediately. I love helping people, and I love creating order out of chaos. But it took me a full decade in business to recognize a third skill hiding in plain sight.

Since the age of 19, I moved on average every three years, all the way into my early fifties. Early moves were simple; I had almost nothing. But as kids arrived and several international relocations followed, the moves grew more complex. What surprised me was that they never felt overwhelming. I actually enjoyed the decluttering, the packing, the logistics, the process of turning a new space into a home.

That’s how The Organizing Professionals became Greater Philadelphia’s largest move management company.

So what exactly does a move manager do?

Here’s a real example. We were recently hired to manage a move for a family of six, from one large Main Line home to another. Here’s how it unfolded:

Step 1: Declutter first. Before a single box was packed, we worked with the family in a series of four-hour decluttering sessions. We believe deeply in starting fresh, letting go of what you no longer love, need, or use before bringing it into a new home. Think of us as personal trainers: we keep you motivated, help you make decisions, and cheer you on when the process gets hard.

Clients often tell us decluttering sessions feel like therapy. You come out the other side feeling lighter.

Once decisions were made about what to keep, we handled everything that wasn’t coming along. That meant scheduling junk removal, arranging donation pickups, and making donation drop-offs ourselves when needed. Nothing was left for the family to figure out.

Once the home was decluttered and tidied, the realtor came in for photos. The house showed so well it sold in a weekend.

Step 2: Pack, coordinate, and manage the move. With moving day approaching, this family left for a one-week vacation and handed us the keys. We supplied all the packing materials, packed the entire home, and worked closely with the moving company we recommended and had coordinated in advance. On moving day, we were on site directing the movers and overseeing placement of every piece of furniture in the new home.

Step 3: Unpack and organize the new home. We didn’t just unload boxes. We unpacked, organized, and set up every room. And when the job was done, we removed all the boxes and packing paper, leaving the home clean and clear. All of this happened within that same one-week window while the family was away.

When they returned from vacation, their new home was completely move-in ready. Every item in its place, every cabinet stocked, every room livable from day one.

Moving is consistently ranked one of life’s most stressful events. That was not this family’s experience.

That’s what a move manager does. We handle every detail so you can keep living your life.

Moving doesn’t have to be stressful. For hundreds of Philadelphia families, it hasn’t been. You could be next.
