The Fall Season Reset: Readjusting to Routine & Reality

Even as an empty nester, I still think of September as a natural reset. Summer Fridays are behind us, vacations are in the rearview mirror, and it’s time to settle back into everyday life.

For some, the return to routine is welcome—something they eagerly anticipate. But if that’s not you, and you’re finding it tough to readjust, here are a few simple strategies to ease the transition:

  1. Give yourself grace. If you have the flexibility to set your own schedule, consider easing back in gradually. Forcing yourself to sit at your desk for hours on end isn’t productive for you—or for your team.
  2. Take mini-breaks. Aim to get up at least once an hour. A quick walk, stretch, or even a trip to the kitchen for a glass of water can help reset your energy.
  3. Tackle brain-heavy tasks at your peak time. For many, that’s first thing in the morning. For others (myself included), it works better to start with lighter tasks and ease into more demanding work once we’re warmed up.
  4. Block your calendar. Once you know your most productive hours, protect them. Block that time on your calendar and resist the temptation to fill it with phone calls or busywork.
  5. Reward yourself. Motivation looks different for everyone. Maybe it’s a walk outside after finishing a project, a second cup of coffee, or a quick call with a friend. Find what works and build it in.
  6. Use your calendar as a tool. If you’re still feeling sluggish, let your calendar be your guide. My own productivity soared when I began creating specific time blocks for designated tasks.

Enjoy this beautiful fall weather, and here’s to embracing the season’s routine with renewed focus and motivation!
