How Do the Super Organized Decorate for the Holidays?

We all have them; those friends or family members who seem to have it all together. Ask them at the beginning of November whether they’ve started their holiday shopping, and they’ll sheepishly admit they’ve already bought everything. Maybe they’ve even decorated their home — gasp! — before Thanksgiving!

So how do they do it?
Our Director of Operations, Bridget James, is probably the most organized person I know. “I take the stress out of the holidays by starting really early,” she says. “I love the holiday season so much that right after Halloween I begin decorating. Why limit it to just four weeks?”

To make the process manageable (and enjoyable), Bridget recommends decorating one room at a time. She starts by deep cleaning each space similar to spring cleaning, but timed before the holiday season so her home is guest-ready and she knows it’s been thoroughly cleaned at least once this year. Then, instead of hauling every decoration out of storage all at once (which can be both exhausting and overwhelming), she focuses on just one room before moving on to the next.

Additional tips from the super organized:

Shop for any new holiday decorations before Thanksgiving. If you wait until Black Friday, you’ll be left with the scraps!
Purchase all the batteries, outlet timers, and extension cords you’ll need before you start decorating.
Pace yourself. Don’t try to do everything in one weekend.
Cull any decorations you haven’t used in the last two years. Just like clothing, if you haven’t put it up recently, chances are you won’t in the future!
Make this the year you organize your decoration tubs. Label them clearly so you can easily find what you need next year.
